How to wire headlights to 12v battery on my 8N??

How to wire headlights to 12v battery on my 8N??

Restored my 1948 8N Ford Tractor # 24342 but not sure how to wire my headlights and tail lights to the battery??? Do I go direct to the post?
Tractor is converted to 12v system. Thanks for any help out there.

Jim Loveridge You want to run a wire from a point on a terminal block that has battery at all times, to one side of a switch. Then from the switch to the lights. Im my opinion, if you wire directly to the battery post, it just causes problems later when you want to remove the cable for cleaning etc. Use 14 gauge wire.
DShrader Thanks Jim for the tip. I will try this tomorrow and report back.

Bob G In addition to what Jims said, some people like to run a wire back to a good ground rather than grounding right at the lights. a good ground is important.
Chopper I would also recommend adding a fusable link in line. They're only a couple of bucks at most auto parts stores, they take a removable fuse and will protect your system. Easy to wire in and adds some safety.
Jim Loveridge Good tips from both Bob and Chopper. My tractor doesen't have head lights but it does have a work light on the back. It wouldn't work half the time till I ran a ground wire to it.
Dick Shrader Succeeded in wiring headlights and taillite on my 8N. (12Volt system). Ran an extra wire to the back of the tractor in order to tie in to my box trailer so the lights will work for Christmas Eve caroling with grandkids.

Problem Can get the box trailer lights to work?? Trailer is wiring with a 4-flat...but all I need is running lights on the trailer from the tractor. I hooked up trailer to ball hitch on tractor for grounding...but still no power. How do I do this? Thanks in advance for any help. I'm in the shop now (2:35pm PST)

Mark J You say u ran one wire back so u can just have runnin' lites on trailer rite? Try runnin 2. Make the second one a ground. Bring it straight off the point where your neg battery cable connects to the tractor. This way you know your gettin' hot and ground to your tailer plug. Wouldn't just trust that a ground is being set up just because you hooked the trailer to the ball hitch.
